Prices for food keep growing
The upward price trend was observed for food products in February this year. The price fluctuations were mainly influenced by seasonal factor. Only the price for chicken has not changed and remained at the level of previous month. The cost of vegetables for borshch set with the exception of onion increased by 5%. Early spring as well as strengthening of hryvnia have led to a slight decline in prices for onion and apples by 5 and 2%, respectively. The price for beef and pork increased by 5 and 4% accordingly, however, it should be noted that the beginning of Lent in late February reduced significantly the demand for meat. The cost of processed products rose due to increased production costs (raising of electricity tariffs) and reduction of the market supply (buckwheat and sugar).
‘The upward price trend for fruits and vegetables under the influence of seasonal factor is expected in March as well. The cost of oil, sugar, bread and buckwheat can be increased in March by 4-6% more under the influence of higher electricity tariffs and reduction of stock level. With regard to the livestock products, the decrease of prices by 5-7% is anticipated in March. The beginning of Lent reducing demand for the products as well as seasonal increase of the milk production are the prerequisites for development of this price trend’ as Yevheniy Dvornik, Adviser on Agricultural Market of UCAB, commented.
