Pork imports fall, poultry imports rise by 30% each
In March Ukraine imported 9,294 t of pork, which is 30% lower than in the previous month. It is also less than imports in March 2012, which amounted to 11,833 tons.
Totally, in the first quarter of 2013 pork imports is 27.7% higher than the last year, but the current year demonstrates a clear downward trend. This was promoted by the enhanced quality control of imported meat, and a temporary ban for imports of Brazilian pork from March 20, 2013.
Pork exports in March totaled 255 t, which is much higher than “tiny” export volumes in February, which amounted to 57 t. However, exports in March are 8 times lower, comparing to 2149 tons in the previous year. This indicates that domestic pork producers, in the first turn, focus on matching the needs of the domestic market.
Ukraine continues to increase poultry exports, which in March amounted to 10,475 t, exceeding by 10% import indexes in February. Against the background of exports, the rise in imports may be observed. In March, Ukraine imported 7158 t of poultry, while in February - only 5529 tons.
As for the foreign trade in beef, comparing to the last month, its exports increased by 5% only – up to 1679 t and imports increased by 36% - up to 249 t.
"Now in Ukraine there may be observed the increase of poultry and pork production, which, in its turn, expands the share of domestic meat in the market and results in exports increase. The analysis of the current situation shows that domestic producers are able to fully meet the domestic demand in main kinds of meat"- UCAB Advisor on agricultural markets Alina Zharko says.
