Export of grain reducing by nearly 5 mio. tons in 2012/2013 marketing year

Export of grain crops in 2012/2013 marketing year will decline by almost 5 mio. tons in comparison with the previous marketing year due to low harvest of early grain crops. This was stated by the Association "Ukrainian Agribusiness Club" (UCAB). In addition, experts have fear about further decline in exports due to record material losses of farmers this year.

Experts of UCAB estimate that the export of maize in 2012/13 marketing year will make up 15.5 mio.tons compared to 15.3 mio.tons in the previous season (with the understanding that the marketing year for maize runs till September), export of wheat will fall from 5.25 mio.tons to 2.3 mio.tons, barley - from 2.5 mio.tons to 500 thousand tons. At the same time, the total export may decline to 18.6 mio.tons, which is 4.6 mio.tons or 20% less than last season. UCAB experts emphasize that despite the expected decrease in the yield of over 10 mio.tons in 2012 compared to the previous year, the reduced export shipments will not be that significant because of considerable carry-over stocks.

"Export potential of the agricultural sector lowers with each passing day of adverse weather conditions. But we also have serious concerns about the harvest of 2013 because the drought and almost twice high regulatory pecuniary valuation of agricultural land this year caused financial losses to farmers at the level of about 10 billion UAH, and many of them will need to choose between the sowing of winter crops and payments for the lease,"- Director General of the Association "Ukrainian Agribusiness Club" Volodymyr Lapa said.

UCAB expresses concern that adverse weather conditions in 2012, combined with the deteriorating economic conditions for management may lead to negative long-term impact on production and export volumes of grain from Ukraine, and hopes that the government will solve the urgent problems of farmers.

Earlier, agrarian associations of Ukraine sent a letter to the Prime Minister Mykola Azarov to review the index of pecuniary valuation of agricultural land, taking into consideration the critical position of farmers due to adverse weather conditions.
