Belarus rye sets the records of Ukrainian import
In January-November 2016 Ukraine imported a record amount of rye - 16.3 thousand tons that in monetary terms is USD 2.5 million. Whereas, for the same period previous year only 0.03 thousand tons of product amounting to USD 0.09 million were imported.

Spring sowing can be disrupted due to impossibility of seeds certification
Members of the Association ‘Ukrainian Agribusiness Club’, American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine, Ukrainian Agrarian Confederation as well as trade unions operating in the area of seed growing and seedling, in particular Seed Association of Ukraine and Ukrainian Seed Partnership uniting and representing interests of the leading market seed participants submitted an open letter to Volodymyr Hroisman, the Prime Minister of Ukraine, with a request not to jeopardize spring sowing for 2017. A reason for the possible disruption of sowing is inability to certify seed materials.

Further improvement of business climate in the agricultural sector of Ukraine
The fifth survey on “Agri business climate index” (ABI) was conducted in November 2016 by APD and UCAB. ABI includes two estimates: an estimate of the current economic situation in the sector and expectations, called agri business climate as well as an indicator of changes in the evaluation of agri business climate, named agri business index. This time again individual households and producers from the Western region of Ukraine improved their evaluation of agricultural business climate significantly. Some of the main reasons of such an estimate are seen in an improved access to modern machinery, in progressing productivity as well as in favorable cost level.

Farmers summarized 2016 production season
The concluding VIII International Conference ‘Doing Agribusiness’ organized by the Association ‘Ukrainian Agribusiness Club’ and AgriEvent Agency took place on 8 December. An aim of the event was to improve understanding by the Ukrainian agricultural producers of internal and external factors affecting their activity in 2017. The event was attended by approximately 300 representatives of the leading agricultural companies and industry experts.

Adoption of the draft Law No.0906 will allow to control epizootic welfare situation more efficiently, - UCAB
Major agricultural associations applied to Oleksandr Bakumenko, the Chairman of Agricultural Committee of Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, to support the draft Law of Ukraine ‘On State control aimed to assure compliance with legislation regarding safety and quality of food products and forage, animal health and welfare’, registration number No.0906 dated 27 November 2014. The relevant letter of application was signed by the following: Agrarian Union of Ukraine, Association ‘Union of Poultry Farmers of Ukraine’, Ukrainian Agribusiness Club, All-Ukrainian Agrarian Council and Meat Production Industrial Corporation.

Twice as much of wagons are necessary for timely export of grain
According to UCAB estimates, the necessity of grain wagons for uninterruptible transportation of grain crops, oilseeds and their processed products taking into consideration peak load in the fall period amounts to 22,000. It is approximately twice as much of available quantity today. Hence, at the present time there is an acute shortage of rolling stock. Due to the shortage of wagons agricultural producers are not able to fulfill export contracts to the fullest extent a well as complete the harvesting campaign since the elevators are overloaded now.

Europe is increasing import of buckwheat
Within the last 10 years, countries of the European Union increased import of buckwheat by 2.3 times from 39 to 91 thousand tons, while production grew only by 8% from 226 thousand tons to 250 thousand tons. The largest European producers of this grain crop are France and Poland providing 80% of the total production.

Taras Vysotskyi: Agricultural sector stands in need of staff updating
An alignment meeting with regard to the training of specialists for agricultural sector as well as effective use of the land and property resources took place at the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences on 1 December. Representatives of the Ministry of Education, rectors of agricultural higher education institutions and heads of industry associations participated in the meeting.
