930 mio UAH down the drain during New Year and Christmas holidays in Ukraine
If to take the standard holiday variety of dishes for four adults and two children, one can see that the average cost of wasted food products amounts to 180 UAH. Taking into consideration the total city population of Ukraine, festive wastes account for about 930 million UAH.
"So, during the holidays the urban population throws out the amount of products that equals to 7500 tons of “Moskovska” sausage, or 13 thousand tons of cheese, or 60 thousand tons of tangerines" - says Taras Gagalyuk, director of UCAB agency AgriSurvey.
According to Mr. Gagalyuk, 59% of survey respondents indicated that 5% of purchased products get spoiled during the holidays; 5% of respondents confessed that they throw over 25% of the purchased products. These indicators suggest that Ukrainians have something to strive for in terms of culture of consumption. At the same time, according to the data provided by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in the world annually about 1.3 billion tons of food get spoiled, which is about one third of the products intended for human consumption.
