UCAB: Next year Ukraine may run out of bread grain
Next year Ukraine may lose milling wheat, if the situation with the unprofitability of grain production is not changed in the near future, President of the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club (UCAB) Alex Lissitsa told reporters on Tuesday.
"In some regions of Ukraine, especially in the south and east of the country, the number of unprofitable farms will reach 90%. Moreover, it will be not agricultural holdings, but small and medium-sized farms will suffer most," Lissitsa noted.
According to him, Ukrainian farmers will not be able to find a way out alone. The government target assistance is needed, the UCAB chief said.
In such circumstances, according to Lissitsa, hardly any of the peasants would agree to plant unprofitable wheat. "This means that in 2013 we will be without bread grain. No matter how we write the map of fields, no matter how we force farmers to plant wheat instead of corn, no one will do it," says the expert.
