In 2014 areas under corn won't change

About 80% of agricultural producers do not plan to change the sowing area under corn in 2014. This is evidenced by the results of survey conducted by the agency AgriSurvey.

Despite of decreasing prices for major crops in the fall of 2013, growing volumes of corn won't change significantly in 2014. Thus, 8.9% of agricultural enterprises plan to increase arable acreage, while 9.3% of growers will reduce the area of sowing. At the same time, about 78.5% of respondents do not plan any changes in volume of corn growing.

Regional differences in plans for crop rotation indicate that a certain increasing of arable area for corn is expected in the southern and central regions, and especially in Cherkasy region where intention to increase the volumes of corn growing was expressed by more than 60% of the polled farmers. In Chernivtsi, Chernigiv, Kirovograd and Kherson regions the sowing areas will be mostely reduced.

"Four years of high yield of corn led to the situation that farmers are willing to continue its grown, despite the unfavourable situation in early 2013/14 marketing year. Plans for sowing are also correlated with profitability from corn growing in the previous year: in the steppe areas where corn growing has become more cost effective in 2013 due to the negative results of 2012, farmers plan to increase the corn sowings” -  says Taras Gagalyuk, Director of the agency AgriSurvey.
