Statistics office: Winter crops die throughout 2,247mn ha
The total area of failure of winter crops for grain and green fodder (including rape) under the harvest of 2012 in Ukraine has amounted to 2.247 million hectares, which is 4.07 times higher than last year, APK-Inform reported citing the State Statistics Office.
The largest areas of winter crops failure are recorded in Kherson (403,400 hectares), Mykolaiv (311,200 hectares), Odesa (270,100 hectares), Dnipropetrovsk (262,100 hectares) and Zaporizhzhia (206,800 hectares) regions.
The minimum areas of failure of winter crops are recorded in Zakarpattia (500 hectares), Volyn (2,800 hectares) and Rivne (3,300 hectares) regions.
In autumn and winter Ukraine experienced adverse weather conditions for winter crops. The area of winter grain crops amounted to 8.4 million hectares.
