Prysiazhniuk: Government set to modernize irrigation networks through concessions
Currently, the government is taking steps to consolidate the irrigation systems in order to continue their reconstruction and modernization, Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Mykola Prysiazhniuk said in Kherson region on Thursday.
"Investment in irrigation should be large enough. One million hectares of land need one billion dollars in investment. We understand that single farmers can't build irrigation system individually. So today there's a decision of the Cabinet of Ministers on accumuling interfarm networks, looking for investors or transferring to concession in order to be able to attract additional investment," the minister said.
He also noted that now the point is about transferring the irrigation systems from communal to the state ownership in order to modernize, in particular, equipment that would meet the new specifications. It is planned that concession would be one of the ways that will make it possible to achieve this.
The minister added that because of rapid climate change over the past 15 years, a sugar beet area has shifted from south to north by 100 kilometers.
