Expert: Ukraine plays significant role in ensuring global food security
Ukraine plays a significant role in ensuring global food security, but at this stage investors are afraid of the unreliability and unpredictability of the situation in the agricultural sector in the country, according to Professor at the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development at the University of Gottingen in Germany Ludwig Theuvsen, a UKRINFORM correspondent reported, referring to the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club.
"First and foremost, agriculture is always very dependent on natural conditions such as soil, climate and weather. Since these factors cannot be changed, the other two aspects are of paramount importance - agricultural materials such as seeds, fertilizers and crop protection means and the organization of the logistics of agricultural production. Thanks to this, a lot of countries can achieve significant increase in efficiency," the expert said.
In his opinion, the potential for increasing the efficiency of agriculture is much higher in developing countries and countries with transformation economies compared with developed countries.
"The Black Sea region, which is geographically located primarily in Ukraine, is important for ensuring food security in a globalized world with a growing population. Natural conditions in the region are simply extraordinary. Therefore, it is time to use its full potential as a 'breadbasket' of the world by improving the efficiency of agriculture, organizing local supply chains (from farms to consumers) and ensuring their full integration into global markets," the German scientist said.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, farmers should increase production by 70% by 2050 in order to meet the needs of a growing population and ensure food security. It is possible to improve the efficiency of agriculture, but it is necessary to professionally and competently apply the knowledge, skills and modern technology, Theuvsen said.
