Europe is increasing import of buckwheat
Within the last 10 years, countries of the European Union increased import of buckwheat by 2.3 times from 39 to 91 thousand tons, while production grew only by 8% from 226 thousand tons to 250 thousand tons. The largest European producers of this grain crop are France and Poland providing 80% of the total production. At the same time, the largest European importers of this crop are Lithuania, Spain, Italy, France and Poland. This situation demonstrates substantial increase of the demand for buckwheat as well as an inability to cope with the demand by means of own production making the European market very attractive for the Ukrainian producers which are currently targeted solely on the unstable domestic market.
It is noteworthy that in the EU buckwheat is used to produce a wide range of products such as flakes, macaroni products, healthy food etc., while in Ukraine the buckwheat is almost completely consumed in the form of cereals.
