Share of Asian region in agriculture sector increased to 48%
Dynamics of export of the Ukrainian agricultural products within recent years displays a significant revival of trade between Ukraine and countries of Asia. Over the past 5 years, revenues from export of the Ukrainian agricultural products to Asia increased from USD 5.7 billion in 2012 to USD 7.4 billion in 2016, while the share of the Asian region in terms of structure of agricultural export from Ukraine increased from 32.1% to 48.2% in 2016.
In view of the complicated system of products standardization and certification in the EU countries, Ukrainian suppliers of agricultural products are more and more crossing over to the trade with Asia. Relations with China, India and Turkey are developing most actively. Specified countries are in the top 10 consumer countries of the Ukrainian agricultural products, and in the Asian region they are in the top 4. Following on from the results of 2016, India took the first place in procuring agricultural products from Ukraine occupying 10.3% of the total agricultural export of Ukraine. China procured 6.7% of all agricultural products (3rd place among consumer countries) and Turkey procured 4% (7th place). In particular, negotiations with Turkey concerning free trade area are already proceeding.
Considering dynamic development of the Asian countries in recent years and development of the specified countries in particular, there is a great potential for increasing export supplies of agricultural products to these countries. Difficulties related to harmonization of technical documentation, systems of certification and standardization of products between Ukrainian and Asian companies constitute an obstacle to further cooperation. In order to boost trade with Asian countries, an assistance of relevant ministries is required to reach consistency in veterinary, phytosanitary and other important issues as well as to facilitate cooperation between countries and market players. The appropriate request was furnished to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food by Ukrainian Agribusiness Club, Ukroliyaprom, Ukrainian Grain Association, Association ‘Union of Poultry Farmers of Ukraine’, ‘Ukrainian Nut Association’.
