Because of bad weather the grain harvest may decline to 40 million tons
Dry weather in June that could be observed almost throughout the whole territory of Ukraine adversely affected the plantings of early grain crops. Experts of the Association "Ukrainian Agribusiness Club" (UCAB) predict a decrease in the grain yield in Ukraine for 3 million tons - to 44 million tons. In case of the further deterioration of weather conditions the grain harvest is expected at the level of about 40 million tons.
"This is confirmed by the first results of the harvesting, which this year started two weeks earlier than usually. In Ukraine as of July 9, about 3,6-3,7 million hectares of early grain crops were threshed with an average yield at the level of 19-19,5 centner / ha (in 2011 - 28.4 centner / ha). Most actively the harvesting is conducted in Southern and Eastern Ukraine ", - said the expert of agricultural markets of UCAB Roman Slastyon.
The expert claims that because of the shortage of moisture and high temperatures early grain crops formed very thin spikes. So, as of today, according to UCAB, the grain harvest is expected at the level of 44 million tons. If dry weather settles for another 2-3 weeks, the expected harvest may decline to 40 million tons.
The information concerning the loss of crops that agricultural commodity producers may suffer due to the destruction by weather will be announced on July 10, at 14:00 during a press conference at the IA "Ukrinform." Unfavorable situation around the harvesting in 2012 will be analyzed by the President of the Association "Ukrainian Agribusiness Club" Alex Lissitsa, the chairman of the Agrarian Union of Ukraine Gennadiy Novikov, the Vice President of the Association of Farmers and Private Landowners of Ukraine Mykola Stryzhak.
