50% decrease of pork imports will allow to increase pig population by 11% - to 8,350 thousand heads

Reduction of pork imports by 50% in 2013 will increase pig population by 11% - up to 8.350 thousand heads and will allow to domestic producers to reach the level of minimum profitability, Association "Ukrainian Agribusiness Club" says.

Sharp increase in meat imports in 2012, primarily pork, already caused the decline in purchase prices for live pigs to the level that does not cover the average breeding cost. This in its turn affects the reduction in pig population and waiver of further investment in the industry.

Thus, 203.7 thousand t of pork were imported to Ukraine in 2012 (86.2 thousand t in 2011). UCAB expert on agricultural markets Elisabeth Svyatkivska claims that such a rapid increase in imports already impacted negatively on the domestic producers who are forced to operate at a loss. Thus, at early February, second category pigs were sold at a price of 17 UAH /kg of live weight, while the average breeding cost amounts to 17-18,5 UAH/kg.

In 2012, sales of pigs for slaughter from farms remained practically at the level of 2011, amounting to 415, 8 thousand tons, which is only 0.1% more than the last year. Sales from population reduced, which is evidenced by the reduction in pig population in households nearly by 2.1% as of January 1, 2012.
