Ukraine. Yield slightly exceeds previous year rate

For today, the yield of grain crops, barley and wheat, harvesting of which has already started in Ukraine, slightly exceeds the previous year level, Vice Premier on Agrarian Policy Viktor Slauta has said.

WTO against US poultry ban

China appears to have «notched up a victory» in a dispute against the US over the latter’s ban on poultry imports, according to an interim report by the World Trade Organization (WTO). «We think the US will not try to impose a similar ban in the next fiscal year, since it would be regarded as open defiance of the latest WTO ruling,» a Ministry of Commerce official, who declined to be named, reports state, adding that Beijing had received the WTO report.

FAO marks World Day to Combat Desertification today with the publication of a manual that shows how a project in Mauritania successfully fixed dunes and stopped sand encroachment. It will serve as a useful blueprint for similar projects in Africa. Sand encroachment is what happens when grains of sand are carried by winds and collect in dunes on the coast, along watercourses and on cultivated or uncultivated land.
