Ukraine: Crimea harvested 1.5 thsd ha of winter barley
As of June 15, 2010, agrarians of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea (Ukraine) harvested winter barley throughout 1.5 thsd ha and produced 3.7 thsd tonnes of the grain, announced Nikolay Polyushkin, the Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.

Ukraine: Crimea increased spring crops sowing areas by 5.3%
As of June 1, 2010, agricultural enterprises of all categories of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea sowed spring crops (taking into account resowing of perished winter crops) throughout the areas of 249 thsd ha, an increase of 5.3% (12.5 thsd ha) compared to the same date of the previous year, declared the Main department of statistics of the Autonomous Republic of the Crimea.

Holding back the sand
FAO marks World Day to Combat Desertification today with the publication of a manual that shows how a project in Mauritania successfully fixed dunes and stopped sand encroachment. It will serve as a useful blueprint for similar projects in Africa. Sand encroachment is what happens when grains of sand are carried by winds and collect in dunes on the coast, along watercourses and on cultivated or uncultivated land.

According to the forecast of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine, in 2010, Ukraine will harvest nearly 48 mln tonnes of grains as opposed to 46 mln tonnes in 2009, declared Sergey Melnik, the First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine, during the international conference "Grain Forum & Grain Industry – 2010".

Ukraine. Kherson seaport expects to finish building grain terminal in december
The Kherson maritime merchandise state owned port expects to complete the construction of a grain terminal with a storage capacity of 24,000 tonnes in December 2010. The port terminal would be built in two stages. The total area of the grain-handling complex would be 0.52 hectares. The cost of the project is UAH 31.3 million. The port finances the construction from it own funds.
