The EU prolonged the glyphosate using for the next 5 years.
UCAB welcomes the decision of the European Commission to extend the license for the glyphosate using for another 5 years. The Association “Ukrainian Agribusiness Club” expressed its concern about the intentions of the European Union to ban the use of this active substance in EU countries and addressed a letter to the Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine.
The debate on the use of this herbicide in Europe lasted more than two years. 18 members of the European Union voted in favor for the license renewal for glyphosate, which is one of the most common herbicides in the world. In Europe, there is no equivalent alternative to this active substance, so the ban could have negative consequences not only for European farmers but also for Ukrainian agriculture, since Ukrainian producers widely use glyphosate products in their activities.
“European politicians objectively assessed the realities of farming and heed to the wishes of agrarians from all over the world, including from Ukraine. The prohibition of glyphosate could jeopardize Ukraine's current trade agreements, that would be a blow to the Ukrainian agrarian sector,”- comments Olha Kukhar, Coordinator of the Agrochemical Committee of the “Association Ukrainian Agribusiness Club”.
