COFCO sees drought cutting China's corn harvest
A drought in China's main corn-growing areas may cut this year's harvest by 12 million tonnes, or 7.5 percent, from 160 million tonnes in 2008, a Chinese corn sector executive said on Thursday. "In the coming years, we don't see any need for imports. China is basically balanced in corn supply and demand," Yue Guojun, assistant president of China's largest grain trader and corn processor COFCO, told reporters on the sidelines of a conference.

EU barley set for intervention, wheat close
Intervention buying will be needed this season to absorb the European Union's hefty surplus of barley, which has already fallen below the bloc's guaranteed minimum price, French analyst Strategie Grains said on Thursday. The analyst raised its estimate for this summer's EU barley crop by 800,000 tonnes to 61.5 million tonnes, contributing to a 1 million tonne increase in its forecast for available supplies this season.

Georgia. Wheat harvests are poor, imports will rise
Despite optimistic predictions by the government, farmers are reporting a dismal wheat harvest that will almost certainly require a hike in imports. EU wheat mixed
Western European wheat prices were mixed on Tuesday as a sharp rebound in Chicago pushed futures higher while heavy supplies and lacklustre demand kept cash markets weak. The Chicago Board of Trade saw a surge in early US trade, fuelled by short-covering after recent lows and fears that forecast frost for next week in the US Midwest could hurt late-developing spring crops.

China forecasts a decrease in soybean imports
China National Grain and Oils Information Center (CNGOIC) predicted on Tuesday that the country's soybean imports in October will fall by less than two million tons from the previous month and may make a record monthly low since September of 2007.
