Ukraine is significantly increasing domestic rapeseed processing and the export of finished products. Due to the introduction of the export duty on rapeseed, domestic consumption and processing in 2025/26 MY are estimated at 1.5 mln tons, which is 2.6 times above the previous marketing year. As a result, the export of rapeseed oil will increase 2.7 times compared to the last season and reach 576 thous. tons.

Key insights regarding this crop:

  • Decrease in sown areas and harvest: in 2025/26 MY, the rapeseed area was 1.3 mln ha, which is 2.4% below the previous marketing year and 3.0% above the 5-year average. At the same time, due to difficult weather conditions, yields decreased to 2.6 t/ha (8.0% below the previous MY and 5.3% below the 5-year average). As a result, the rapeseed harvest in 2025/26 MY decreased to 3.2 mln tons, which is 10.1% below the previous MY.
  • Rapid growth in oil production: despite the smaller harvest, rapeseed oil production in 2025/26 MY is expected to increase 2.6 times and reach 582 thous. tons. For comparison, in 2024/25 MY, 221 thous. tons were produced (2.0 times below the previous year), as high demand for rapeseed then led to a decline in processing in the country.
  • Export dominance: domestic consumption of rapeseed oil in Ukraine is extremely low because Ukrainians prefer sunflower oil. It amounts to only 4-6 thous. tons per year, and the rest produced is exported. In 2025/26 MY, rapeseed oil exports will amount to 576 thous. tons. Regarding raw materials directly, its export will decrease 1.8 times — to 1.8 mln tons. The main export destinations for rapeseed and its processed products are the EU countries and Asia.

Conclusion: the situation in the rapeseed market in 2025/26 MY is an example of the reorientation of the Ukrainian agricultural sector from raw material exports to the production of higher value-added products. Despite the decrease in the overall harvest due to weather factors, it is expected that regulatory changes will stimulate internal processing. This will make it possible to increase the production and export of rapeseed oil to international markets.
