Price for garlic increased three-fold

As of the beginning of October, the price for garlic in Ukraine on average amounted to 50-55 UAH/kg, which is more than three times higher than last year. Thus in October 2014 the value of garlic averaged 16-17 UAH/kg.

The main reasons for increase of price for garlic in Ukraine this season are decrease of acreage by 6% compared to last year, higher production costs and unfavorable weather conditions during its cultivation. Drought, observed in several regions, reduced the quality of production on the market and caused difficulties of storage. At the same time industrial production of garlic does not exceed 2% of the total, that is why import production, the price for which increased due to the devaluation of national currency, occupies a significant share on the markets and in stores.
