Key insights:
- Dominance of two crops: corn and wheat form about 92% of grain exports. On one hand, this highlights their strategic importance for the agricultural sector and global demand; on the other, it creates a dependency on the market conditions for these specific crops.
- Wartime dynamics: after a record export figure for grains in 2021 ($12.49 billion), there was a significant drop to nearly $8.39 billion by 2023 due to the full-scale invasion and the lack of stable logistics through sea channels. However, by 2024, exports had already increased to $9.56 billion, showing a positive trend and the gradual recovery of the industry.
- Market diversification: despite the significant share of the European market, in 2024, almost 60% of grain exports were directed to countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, indicating that Ukraine is maintaining its status as a global supplier.
Conclusion: making up more than a third of all agro-exports, grains remain a significant component of Ukraine’s agri-food product exports. The geography of supplies to 107 countries demonstrates global reach, although the EU remains the key sales market. At the same time, the increase in export volumes in 2024 underscores the high adaptability of the sector and its critical role not only for Ukraine but also for the food security of countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, where the majority of all grain exports are collectively sent.
