Toward the EU Carbon-Neutral Economy: The Potential of a Combined EU/Ukrainian Agricultural Powerhouse

Ukrainian Agribusiness Club Association (UCAB) together with UCABevent agency and Farm Europe invite you to the joint closed-door workshop “Toward the EU Carbon-Neutral Economy: The Potential of a Combined EU/Ukrainian Agricultural Powerhouse”, dedicated to exploring how a combined EU/Ukrainian agricultural system as a bioeconomy can help the EU achieve climate neutrality, energy security, and food security at the same time.

The workshop will focus on exploring potential synergies between the EU and Ukrainian agricultural sectors through the bioeconomy dimension, by looking at sectoral topics from feedstock crops for biomethane/bioethanol production to carbon farming and storage, new biogenic materials, to name just a few.

It will identify regulatory and policy bottlenecks standing in the way of unleashing the potential of agriculture to shaping a carbon neutral economy while fostering synergies, in the form of the existing EU regulatory framework and the terms of Ukraine’s alignment with it as a part of the country’s EU accession process.

Discussion points:

  • The need for EU regulatory overhaul for the agricultural sector as a bioeconomy sector: biomass for energy or biomass for food and feed dilemma under the EU RED III directive, sustainability criteria and plant proteins self-sufficiency, relationship between agricultural sector and the ETS.
  • Ukraine’s role in the European bioeconomy: how Ukraine’s agricultural capacity, including major oilseed and biomass output, can contribute to EU decarbonisation, biofuels, and industrial bio-based value chains.
  • Investment and transition pathways: what incentives, financing tools, policy signals and legislative reforms are needed to unlock Ukraine-EU agricultural and bioeconomy synergies even before EU accession.
  • Strategic autonomy and resilience: how a larger, better integrated agricultural bioeconomy can strengthen energy independence, reduce fossil-carbon dependence, support global market stability as well as strengthen food and feed production.
