Romania. GDP lower by 7.1%t in 2009 compared to 2008

Romania's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), estimated for 2009 was 7.1 percent lower in real terms as against the GDP in 2008, the National Statistics Institute (INS) informs in a release remitted AGERPRES on Wednesday.

Russia. Vladivostok expects over 30.000 tons of exported grain in Q1, 2010

Commercial Sea Port of Vladivostok (CPV) has projected more than 30.000 tons of export grain to be transshipped in the first quarter this year from its grain terminal, the Port Authority statement said. In January-February CPV has handled 30.400 tons of grain. The volume includes 9.970 tons of coastal trade and 20.440 tons of exports.

A tree for a child in Haiti

FAO is asking people to lend a hand to children in Haiti by donating a fruit tree that they can plant in school yards across the country. The UN food agency’s Director-General, Jacques Diouf, will launch the «Fruit Trees for Haiti» initiative at a symbolic tree-planting at a school in the town of Croix des Bouquets, outside of Port-au-Prince, which while untouched by the earthquake is now playing host to tens of thousands of refugees from the capital.

State aid: the European Commission approves the aid granted to Farm Dairy Flevoland in the Netherlands

The European Commission has today decided that the aid granted in 1999 by the Dutch Province Flevoland to the undertaking Farm Dairy Flevoland is compatible with the State aid rules which applied when the aid was granted. The aid amounts to ˆ 715 000. The aid had been granted by the Province Flevoland as investment aid to the undertaking Farm Dairy Flevoland, located in Lelystad, which specialises in the production of bottled milk, yoghurts and other milk-based desserts.

FAO-African Virtual University agreement on e-learning

FAO and the African Virtual University (AVU) have signed a partnership agreement aimed at widening access to education and communications technologies in developing countries. The two organizations will share educational resources and integrate FAO e-learning courses in the AVU e-campus for Development and Peace.

IMF predicts this year’s inflation in Ukraine may be up to 10%

The International Monetary Fund believes Ukraine’s inflation may reach 10% in 2010. IMF Resident Representative in Ukraine Max Alier said this at a news conference on the prospects of economic development in Ukraine after the presidential election and on Ukraine’s attractiveness for investors.

Food imports grow by USD 813 million in 2009

Ukraine reduced the export of plant products, food, as well as fats and oils of animal or vegetable origin by over USD 2.871 billion in 2009 year-on-year, the State Statistics Committee has reported.
