Wet Weather May Keep Frost at Bay in Southern Prairie

This season’s wet conditions may keep an early frost at bay in the southern Prairies, but more northern areas may not be as lucky. Aston Chipanshi, the manager of climate monitoring and forecasting, Agriculture Canada, said the more southern areas of Western Canada have a good chance of avoiding an early frost, because of the damp conditions. «There’s too much moisture in this area,» Chipanshi said. «Moisture itself generates heat when it’s evaporating, and that should prevent temperatures from dropping below zero (degrees Celsius).» But while the southern part of the prairies may be spared from early frost, the outlook isn’t as good for northern Alberta and the lower interior of B.C. «The Peace Region and lower mainland of B.C. have about a 60–70% chance of an early frost,» Chipanshi said. An early frost would be bad news for western Canadian producers, with some crops still as much as two to three weeks behind normal development.
