USDA upgrades its forecast for grain harvest in Ukraine by 1.1%

The Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has upgraded its forecast for the grain harvest in Ukraine in the 2011-2012 marketing season to 44 million tons, comparing to 43.5 million tons in the May forecast, the service said in a statement.
The improvement of the forecast largely concerns the forecast for the harvest of coarse grains (barley, oats, etc). In May 2011, their harvest was expected to reach 24.4 million tons, whereas now it amounts to 24.9 million tons. According to the USDA, the coarse grain crop in Ukraine last year totaled 21.4 million tons. The expected wheat harvest has remained unchanged - at 19 million tons, comparing to 16.8 million tons in the 2009-2010 marketing season. In addition, FAS analysts raised their forecast for the maize harvest from 14.5 million tons to 15 million tons (the approximate harvest in the 2009-2010 marketing year - 11.92 million tons). The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) also estimated the grain harvest in Ukraine at 44 million tons.
