USDA tips smaller wheat crop
FURTHER production problems in Russia and the European Union have resulted in the US Department of Agriculture reducing its global wheat crop estimate.
In its latest grain crop report, the USDA has revised world wheat production to 643 million tonnes, 2.7 million tonnes lower than its August forecast.
The Russian wheat crop has been lowered by 2.5 million tonnes to 42.5 million tonnes - about two-thirds the size of a normal harvest.
The USDA has reduced its forecast of the EU wheat crop by 2.4 million tonnes to 135.1 million tonnes.
These were offset by a larger-than-expected Canadian wheat crop, which grew by two million tonnes to 22.5 million tonnes.
"Production for Russia is lowered 2.5 million tonnes based on the latest harvest results for the drought-affected central growing areas in the Volga and Urals Federal Districts," the report said.
The department has left the Australian and US wheat crops unchanged at 23 million tonnes and 61.6 million tonnes respectively.
