Ukraine. Winter crops sown on almost 90% of predicted areas - agriculture ministry
Ukraine as of October 22 sowed winter crops on an area of almost 7.64 million hectares, or 89% of the forecast. By the same date in 2009, winter grain crops covered almost 7.6 million hectares.
As UKRINFORM learned from the Agriculture Ministry, winter wheat this year, in particular, has already been planted on 6.3 million hectares (93% of the forecast), against 6 million hectares by the same date last year, winter barley on 0.97 million hectares (70%) against 1.14 million ha.
Farmers sowed winter crops for the 2010 harvest, including rapeseed, on 10.1 million hectares, almost 3% more than in 2008. In particular, winter crop areas increased by 3.7% to 8.6 million hectares. Acreage under winter wheat accounted for nearly 6.7 million hectares (2.6% more), barley almost 1.6 million ha (25.4%).
The Agrarian Policy Ministry predicts that this year's winter crops will be planted on almost 8.5 million hectares, including wheat on 6.76 million ha.
