Ukraine wastes a quarter of all vegetables
Total quantity of wasted vegetables is 27% of all yield or 2,6-3 million tons. This is the results of the previous year excluding potatoes. 2,1-2,3 million tons of vegetables were lost in production (78% of total losses ), processors and consumers wasted 0,5-0,7 million tons ( 22%) of vegetables.
According to words of Anatoly Tsyrkun, director of the agency «AgriEvent», lost of cabbage is 22% of the total yield in 2012 ( 410-440 tons ), beetroot - 35 % ( 315-345 tons) , carrots – 30% ( 260 -280 tons ) onion – 32% ( 353-375 tons) and potatoes – 23% ( 5,6 million tonnes).
«Lost vegetables could annually generate approximately 2,5-2,7 billion of additional venue for Ukrainian farmers. Main reason for such significant losses, is a lack of vegetable facilities – most of them remained since the Soviet Union. That’s why storage technology are outdated and do not satisfy to the modern requirements. All these factors make difficult existance of many vegetables producers because of significant losses of this kind of business is losing its appeal», – said the expert.
Total demand in the storages are currently estimated at 4,1 million tons. At the beginning of 2013, according to the results of the certification, Ukrainian farmers has only 32 % of the required capacities of vegetable stores (1,3 million tons), or 14% of predicted vegetable harvest (excluding potatoes) in the 9-9.5 million tons.
We remind you that according to the state program of revitalization of economic development for 2013-2014 envisages the construction of 16 high-power vegetable storages with a total capacity of 140 tons.
