Ukraine to export 24 million tonnes of grain in 2008-09
Ukrainian grain exports in the 2008/09 season (July-June) are likely to reach 24 million tonnes and the ending stocks could stand at 6.9 million tonnes, agriculture union UAK said on Wednesday. "Grain exports in May-June are likely to total 2.9 million tonnes," UAK, which unites leading Ukrainian agriculture producers and traders, said in a statement.
The union said wheat stocks could total 3.5 million tonnes as of July 1, or by 34 percent more than at the same date in 2008. Barley stocks could total 1.4 million tonnes, and maize 1.0 million. The Agriculture Ministry said on Tuesday it planned to increase its 2008/09 grain export forecast to a record 26 million tonnes from the previous 25 million. Deputy Farm Minister Valentyna Zavalevska said the exports had reached 23 million tonnes as of mid-May.
