Ukraine. Planting winter crops for the 2011 harvest
The planting campaign started in Ukraine on September 1. The first 15 Th ha of winter crops for grain has been planted for the 2011 harvest. The planting start date is exactly the same as last year. There are some peculiarities though. Despite the long drought, the rainfalls that began in September did raise the soil moisture content to the level of past years. Anyway, in the Northern regions, where the planting works are currently underway, the soil contains not less moisture than in bumper-crop years.
It should be noted that this year’s initial weather conditions were even better for winter crops than last year, when they were planted in dry soil. And the continuing rains will lead to further increase in the soil moisture content. This will give plants enough time to tiller before entering the winter.
