Ukraine plans to produce 1.5 mln tons of sugar this year, agriculture minister says
This year, sugar supply in the domestic market will be about 1.5 million tons, Minister of Agriculture and Food Mykola Prysiazhniuk told reporters on Monday.
"Ukraine began harvesting sugar beets. A sugar refining season gets underway. And to date sugar beets are being processed in Lviv and Vinnytsia regions. Overall this year, 63 enterprises are planning to deal with the processing of the sweet root. They will process about 12 million tons of sugar beets," the minister said.
According to the minister, such volumes of the sweet root will allow to produce 1.5 million tons of sugar. Also, today in Ukraine there are still more than 800,000 tons of sugar carryover stocks.
"After that Ukrainians are guaranteed to be with sugar. Indeed, domestic sugar consumption is estimated at an average of 1.8 million tons. Therefore, the product produced in conjunction with the carryover stocks will totally suffice for the annual needs of the market. Besides, we will certainly have the necessary carryover stocks at the beginning of the next marketing year," Prysiazhniuk emphasized.
