Ukraine: Hydrometeorological Center to forecast maize production to total 10 mln tonnes
The Hydrometeorological Center of Ukraine forecasts that in 2010, maize production in the country will total 10 mln tonnes, stated Tatiana Adamenko, the Head of Agrometeorologic Department of the Hydrometeorological Center of Ukraine, on August 12.
According to her, taking into account the weather conditions, which dominated in the country in the first decade of August, the average yield is forecasted at the level of 41.7 c/ha.
The expert stated that in some regions (mostly in western regions of Ukraine) maize sowings did not suffer, however there are rather small sowing areas for the grain. Due to anomaly high temperature background, in eastern and southern oblasts, which have rather large-scale maize sowing areas, the period off maize vegetation essentially decreased, which will cause the crop shortage.
