Ukraine Has to Replant 20% of Winter Grains, Association Says

Nov. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Farmers in Ukraine will have to replant 20 percent of winter grains for the 2012 crop after dry weather curbed growth, the Ukrainian Grain Association said.

Winter grains are “weak” on most of the planted areas, the Kiev-based group said in a statement on its website today. Corn, spring wheat and soybeans will be replanted, it said.

Winter grains sprouted on 3.9 million hectares (9.6 million acres) as of Oct. 27, or 53 percent of the planted area, the group said. Wheat accounts for about 80 percent of winter grain plantings, according to Agriculture Ministry data.

Of the sprouted winter grains, 2.8 million hectares are in good and satisfactory state, and 1.1 million hectares are weak and thinned, according to the grain association.
