Ukraine had gathered 34.1 million tonnes of early grain and leguminous crops as of August 18, 2011 from 99.5% of the area under crops, the Agrarian Policy and Food Ministry has reported.

According to the report, the average yield of early grain and leguminous crops in the country is 30.5 centners (one metric centner equals 100 kilograms, or 220.46 pounds) per hectare against 24.7 centners per hectare as of the same date in 2010.

The highest grain yields were recorded in Vinnytsia region (42 centners per hectare), Khmelnytsky region (41.8 centners per hectare) and Cherkasy region (37.1 centners per hectare).

As of August 17, 2011, 9.4 million tonnes of grain had been sent to certified elevators, which is 28% of the threshed crops, including six million tonnes of wheat, two million tonnes of barley, 67,900 tonnes of beans and 64,700 tonnes of rye.

The ministry also said that farmers had prepared 7.6 million hectares for the planting of winter crops, which is 83% of the target. Farmers have 1.8 million tonnes of seeds, which is 101% of their needs.

As reported, Ukraine's grain harvest will total 47-50 million tonnes in 2011 according to various assessments against 39.3 million tonnes in 2010.
