Ukraine brews 6.2% less beer in 2009
There was 6.2% less beer than in 2008 brewed in Ukraine last year - 3.005 billion liters in all, General Director of the brewers association Ukrpivo Galina Korenkova told Interfax.
The Ukrainian beer market, according to Ukrpivo data, contracted 7.4% last year to 2.653 billion liters. The country exported 342 million liters of beer in 2009, 2.9% than the year before, and imported 16 million liters, 16.2% less.
The economic crisis was behind the drop in beer-market numbers, Korenkova said. Brewing companies are hoping to maintain last year's production levels this year, she said. However, "This will be possible only if there is stability on the legislative field, most of all, excises." Ukrainian beer production has been slipping since the end of H1 2008.
