Ukraine. Agriculture Ministry: This year's sunflower seed harvest 36.8% higher than last year's
Ukraine harvested 34 million tons of grain as of September 27, 2010, which was almost 11.8% less than on the same date in 2009, the Agriculture Ministry has told UKRINFORM.
According to the ministry, farmers harvested 4.8 million tons of corn, compared to the 1.1 million tons reported on September 27, 2009, with the average yield currently being 40.7 quintals per hectare.
In addition, agribusinesses harvested 4 million tons of sunflower seeds, which was 36.8% more than on the same date last year, and 4.14 million tons of sugar beets (2.7 times more). The average yield of these crops was 15.4 quintals per hectare and 311 quintals per hectare respectively.
The Ukrainian government predicted this year's grain harvest at around 39 million tons, compared to the 46 million tons recorded in 2009.
