UCAB: Export perspectives of Ukrainian grain reducing day by day due to heat
The export potential of grain crops with each day of bad weather is reducing. In the 2012/2013 marketing year, it will decrease by almost 5 million tons as compared with the previous season due to lower harvest of early crops. Moreover, the experts have the fear of further decline in exports due to record material losses of farmers this year, the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club (UCAB) said in a statement.
"The export potential of the agricultural sector with each passing day of bad weather is falling. But we have serious concerns about the harvest, and in 2013 because of the drought and almost twice as high regulatory monetary value of land this year's financial losses of farmers will be a record - about UAH 10 billion, and many of them will have to choose between the sowing of winter crops and payments for the lease," UCAB Director General Volodymyr Lapa said.
According to UCAB experts, the export of maize in 2012/13 marketing year will be 15.5 million tons against 15.3 million tons in the previous season [given the fact that the marketing year for corn runs through September], the export of wheat will fall from 5.25 million tons to 2.3 million tons, barley - from 2.5 million tons to 500,000 tons. The total export could drop to 18.6 million tons, down 4.6 million tons or 20% than last year.
The analysts also emphasize that with the expected decrease in the harvest of more than 10 million tons this year compared with the previous year, a decline in export shipments will still not be so significant because of considerable carry-over stocks (according to some estimates - 12 million tons).
As reported, First Deputy Minister of Agricultural Policy and Food Mykola Bezuhly predicted that the current marketing year Ukraine would export about 25-27 million tons of grain.
