May frosts put at risk harvest of fruits and berries
April-June period is important for flowering and fruit ovaries formation of the fruit trees and berries. Due to the sharp decrease in temperature on 9-11 May the process of flowering and young fruit formation occurs under difficult conditions. The air temperature in some regions, particularly in the western regions and parts of the northern regions, reduced to zero and even reached 8 degrees below zero (on the ground).
According to the survey of manufacturers conducted by the UCAB experts, losses of early berries in the western regions where frosts were the most significant reach 90% and fruit yield – up to 50%. As explained growers, the old Soviet-style gardens and trees in the lowlands have been affected the most. Manufacturers from Vinnytsia region informed about 30% of slightly frozen strawberries. It will be possible to assess in more details the impact of May frosts only closer to the middle of June.
