Soil moisture content improved considerably
Soil moisture replenished significantly as a result of winter precipitation. For example, the content of productive moisture at the one-meter soil layer equals 160-170 mm in Kherson region (one of the most arid region of Ukraine) even on sown fields that were not fallow prior to planting last fall. That is 30-45% higher than average annual values. This moisture is an important positive factor contributing to crop formation in this arid region.
However, the high saturation of the soil with moisture resulted in washing soluble nutrients to lower soil layers. The role of early spring nitrogen fertilization application on frozen soil increases to help winter weakened crops.
