Sauces production, exports, imports down in H1 2009

On preliminary estimate of the State Statistics Committee, in the first half of 2009, sauces production in Ukraine dropped by 10% year-over-year to 119,400 tons. Output of mayonnaise and emulsified sauces stood at 79,400 tons (down 9.4%), that of ketchups and tomato sauces at 36,400 tons (down 11.8%), and mustard at 3,600 tons (down 2.7%). Most of producers do not expect production to grow as of 2009. The recession forced a lot of players to abandon their expensive products and optimize the range of sauces. Nevertheless, novelties are launched. For example, the Kiev-based company Chumak started to produce tomato sauce Khersonsky and the company Nestle Ukraine launched the sauce Satsebeli.

Export of sauces in the first half of 2009 amounted to 9,800 tons worth USD 12.90mn (EUR 9.05mn), down 14% against the same period of 2008. Imports dropped by over 50% to 6,300 tons worth USD 21.6mn. Due to the crisis, a lot of sauce importers, in particular Russia's Baltimor Holding, closed down their representative offices in Ukraine. In 2008 exports and imports of sauces in Ukraine totalled 21,800 tons and 21,000 tons respectively.
