Russia may resume maize exports in the current year – Russian Grain Union

In the current year, Russia may resume maize exports, declared Arkady Zlochevsky, President of Russian Grain Union, on August 24. According to his forecast, in the current year Russia will produce 5.8-6 mln tonnes of maize, at the same time, the consumption is estimated at the level of 3.5 mln tonnes.

A.Zlochevsky added that the country will receive large maize surplus, and it is not bad. To date the world market has good conjuncture for maize trading, and it provides support prices for wheat.

Russia had the record maize production volumes in 2008-2009 crop year. In that period, maize exports from Russia (according to April data of that year) exceeded the level of 750 thsd tonnes. Previously, the export volumes of maize did not exceed the level of 100 thsd tonnes.

In the current year, Russia expects for high production volumes of rye, buckwheat, rice, said A.Zlochevsky. For example, in 2011 Russia will produce over 700 thsd tonnes of buckwheat, with domestic consumption of just over 1 mln tonnes. Thus, buckwheat prices start reducing. Rice production in 2011 is expected to reach 1.2 mln tonnes.
