RF to shift sea cargo carriages from Ukraine to Russian ports

The authorities of Krasnodar Territory of Russia have reached agreement on a two-year program to boost the handling capacity of its ports in order to draw over the flow of import-export cargo carriages from Ukraine to the Russian Black Sea ports.

"Krasnodar Territory is to take over from Ukrainian ports within the next two years at least 30 per cent of all the cargoes they now handle and to be able to tranship them trough its own ports," First Deputy Head of the Territorial Administration Dzhanbulat Khatuov stated. "This calls for the prompt implementation and special financing of all the investment projects," he added.

The point in question is to enlarge cargo ports on the coasts of the Azov and Black Seas. Krasnodar Territory has the biggest sea transportation centres of Southern Russia, including the ports of Novorossiisk, Tuapse, Eisk, Kavkaz, Temryuk and Sochi. Almost forty percent of all the foreign trade and transit cargoes of Russia, shipped by sea, are handled by the stevedor companies of Krasnodar Territory. However, a big share of Russian cargoes is still being shipped via Ukrainian ports. To avoid this, it is necessary to expand ferry services, to complete the existing investment projects within the ports proper, and to analyse the policy of tariffs.

The Territory is confronted with the priority task of enhancing the port handling capacities, Governor Alexander Tkachev summed up, dwelling on the crux of the project during the Monday meeting in Eisk of the Regional Council for Marine Affairs. "We are undertaking ambitious plans not only to maintain the existing port facilities, but also of attracting new cargo streams, of building up new trans-shipment centres," he stressed.
