Prysiazhniuk: No threat of food crisis in Ukraine

Ukraine has enough material resources to ensure food security, Ukrainian Agricultural Policy and Food Minister Mykola Prysiazhniuk has said.

He announced this during his visit to PJSC Rise as part of his working trip to Sumy region on Monday, a UKRINFORM reporter said.

"There is no threat of food shortage in our country. Ukraine produces three times more than it consumes, therefore, our task is to preserve foreign markets and extend them if possible," Prysiazhniuk said.

He said that today, when Ukrainian farmers are planning to harvest 45 million tons of grain, such a harvest, compared to last year's 57 million tons, is relatively low.

"However, for example, in 2003 Ukraine harvested 23 million tons of grain, so the progress on this issue is obvious, and we have to improve this dynamics," the minister said.

In his opinion, science plays a significant role here.

"We understand that weather conditions play a significant role in the agricultural sector. But we also know that if the achievements of science, technology and selection are used properly, Ukrainian farmers can have high yields regardless of the vagaries of nature. And now the task of Ukrainian science is to work out the recommendations so that crops on the fields could be resistant to any climatic conditions. We are working on this, and we see that it gives certain results," Prysiazhniuk said.
