On sales of beer in different packaging in 2009
According to market operators, in January-September 2009, retail sales of beer in Ukraine shrank by 20-25% in volume. Before the autumn, sales fell only in volume. In the autumn, the market started to decline in value (down 4-5%).
According to ACNielsen Ukraine, beer in glass bottles accounted for 46.3% of beer retail sales in January-August 2009 (0.5-litre bottles for 44.2%), PET packaging for 45.2% (one-litre for 26.8%, two-litre for 15.4%), cans for 8.5% (0.5-litre for 8.4%).
According to the company MEMRB-UMG Retail Trade Monitoring in Ukraine, beer sales structure (by packaging) in February-August 2009 changed against the same period of 2008 as follows: beer in glass bottles accounted for 49% in volume against 51% a year before, beer in plastic bottles for 42% (42%), in cans for 9% (7%). Beer in glass bottles occupied 56% of the market in value this year (in February-August 2008 - 58%), plastic packaging 32% (33%), cans 12% (9%). Brewers and manufacturers of cans say that sales of beer in cans are also falling this year.
The company Ken-Pak Ukraine posted a 23% decline in the production of beer cans in the nine months of 2009 year-over-year. In spite of this trend, General Director of the Donetsk-based plant Sarmat (owned by SABMiller) Igor Tikhonov thinks that the segment of beer in cans will remain the most promising in the Ukrainian beer market.
Sales of draught beer in 2009 have risen slightly. The share of beer in kegs of the company Slavutich (Carlsberg Group) rose to 11.8% in the eight months against 10.3% a year ago. Several specialty restaurants and mini breweries have considerably increased sales of non-pasteurized beer (up 20-50%).
