On 29 May President Yushchenko signed the Order No 378 "On some measures with regard to the financial state of the agricultural sector of the economy and the development of animal breeding".
The order gives the Cabinet of Ministers 20 days to prepare an analysis of the influence of imports on the balance of payments of Ukraine. Then, depending on the results, the Cabinet of Ministers has been asked to determine whether measures are needed to restrict imports for the purpose of protection of domestic producers, in the first instance domestic agricultural producers.
The previous attempt of Ukrainian law-makers to restrict imports was the notorious 13% extra duty on certain imported goods, which was in place from 6 March till 25 March 2009.
