Number of sugar refineries keeps decreasing
Half of 120 Ukrainian sugar refineries ceased operation in 2004-2008 because of overproduction of sugar in the domestic market. Market insiders expect that the number of operating enterprises would decrease by other 10-15 in the coming season. In particular, sugar refineries of the bankrupt company YuVS will not resume operation. Ukrros is planning to freeze two out of six sugar refineries. The decrease in number of operating facilities and reduction of lands sowed with sugar beets would result in fall-off of output of sugar by 1.5mn tons of less and 500,000 tons deficit of the product in the domestic market in 2009. As a result of the latter, wholesale prices for sugar are to stand at not less that H 4,000 (US$ 502.83 EUR 372.21) for a ton. Retail prices are to rise to H 5-5.5 a kilogram.
