New Year's table will be more expensive than last year
This year, food for New Year's holidays will cost more than in 2016. According to the State Statistics Service, the consumer price index for food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by an average of 18% for the year. Meat and meat products have risen in price most of all, as well as milk, cheese and eggs.
In December of this year, prices for a number of vegetables increased substantially compared with the same period last year: beet (+62%) and carrots (+ 59%), and the value of New Year's fruit - mandarin increased by 68%.
Prices for meat, milk and processed products also have risen. The average price for pork increased by 38%, beef - 33%, and chicken - 28%. Over the year the prices for milk and wheat bread increased by 22% and eggs - by an average of 23%. The main reasons for rising prices are a sharp reduction in the number of cattle and pigs, which together with inflation led to the rise in prices for meat, milk and products of their processing.
The only products that became cheaper - sugar and buckwheat. Thus, the cost of buckwheat fell by 35%, and sugar - by 14%.
«Despite the inflationary processes, the growth of prices for vegetables and fruits is typical for the period of pre-New Year holidays, as it is a period of active import of foreign products. Also, during the winter period, the growth of milk prices is characterized by the seasonal decline in production. In the future, meat prices could raise due to the increase of prices on the world market and the reduction in the number of cattle and pigs in the domestic market», commented Daria Grytsenko, analyst of agricultural markets of the Association «Ukrainian Agribusiness Club».
