Minister of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine forecasts opportune providing of the spring sowing campaign

Ukrainian agrarians provide the spring sowing campaign within the planned schedule, and will opportune complete the sowing works, declared Nikholay Prysyashnuk, the Minister of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine, on April 16.

The Minister confirmed the previously declared forecast concerning the general sowing areas of agricultural crops for the harvest-2010 forming the area of 26.9 mln ha. Particularly, in the current year, Ukrainian agrarians plan to enlarge sowing areas of maize by 150 thsd ha, soybean – by 150 thsd ha. At the same time, barley and sunflower sowing areas are forecasted to decrease by 500 thsd ha each crop.

According to N.Prysyashnuk, in the current year, agrarians will resow nearly 1 mln ha of winter crop sowings.

As a reminder, according to preliminary data of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine, the country will sow 26.9 mln ha of agricultural crops for the harvest-2010, including 15.6 mln ha of spring crops (7.3 mln ha of grains and leguminous plants, 6.3 mln ha of industrial crops, 1.9 mln ha of potato and vegetables, 2.8 mln ha of feed crops).

In the current year, the sowing campaign in the country started in later terms compared to traditional sowing terms, due to cold weather conditions.

According to data of the State Statistics Committee, agrarians sowed winter crops for the harvest-2010 throughout 10.1 mln ha, up 3% compared to areas for the harvest-2009.
