Malting barley profitability in 2012 is 50%
According to the Association "Ukrainian Agribusiness Club" (UCAB), profitability of malting barley at agricultural enterprises of Ukraine in 2012 was about 50%, whereas last year its average was 25%.
According to UCAB expert on agricultural markets Roman Slastyon, the most successful farms based on the results of malting barley sales this year reached 100% yield, which corresponds to the main most profitable crops - sunflower, canola and corn.
According to UCAB, to achieve such a level of profitability was possible due to the growth of this year's malting barley harvest and high prices for it. In particular, the harvest of malting barley in 2012 increased to 38 dt/ha, which is 22% above the level in 2011.
Overall, it's worth noting that the malting barley in Ukraine remains a niche crop as the expanding of its production is limited by domestic demand from malt houses and high competition on the international market.
If we consider the prospects of the agricultural business in 2013, to realize a high interest in increasing the production of malting barley in Ukraine will be possible only with the active entry into international markets.
