In 2011 Ukraine to produce at least 45 mln tonnes of grains — Ministry of Agrarian Policy

In 2011, the general grain production in Ukraine will total at least 45 mln tonnes against 39.3 mln tonnes in 2010, said Nikolay Bezugly, First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, on June 22.

In particular, winter wheat production is expected at the level of over 20 mln tonnes, maize - over 17 mln tonnes, buckwheat - 250 thsd tonnes, barley - 8-9 mln tonnes.

According to N.Bezugly, grain exports from Ukraine in 2011/2012 marketing year (July - June) will total 20-25 mln tonnes. To date, the Ministry does not see any prerequisites for the administrative limitations of grain exports.

The First Deputy Minister added that the range of countries of the Middle East & North Africa regions is interested in conclusion of intergovernmental contracts on imports of Ukrainian grains.

In May 2011, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy forecasted grain production in Ukraine in 2011 at the level of over 45 mln tonnes.

In early June 2011 the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) improved the forecast of grain production in Ukraine by 0.55 mln tonnes compared to the forecast in the previous month - up to 43.9 mln tonnes.

In the beginning of June 2011, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy estimated the planned volume of grain exports from the country in 2011/2012 MY at the level of 15-18 mln tonnes.

In 2010, Ukraine produced 39.3 mln tonnes of grains and leguminous plants (in clean weight), a decrease of 14.6% compared to 2009 results, when the harvest totaled 46 mln tonnes.
